Skin, Hair & Nail Care

Healthy looking skin, hair and nails don't happen by accident.

Here are our tips to help you look your best on your special day.

For healthy skin

Drink plenty of water during the day (up to eight glasses), to prevent dehydration and to assist in the elimination of toxins from the body, which can help reduce spots.
If you smoke, try stopping! Recent research has shown that smoking destroys collagen, making your skin age more rapidly.
Protect your skin from the drying effects of the wind and ultaviolet light from the sun. Dermatologists recommend the daily use of a moisturiser, which incorporates a sunscreen with a sun protective factor (SPF) of at least 15. It is widely believed that the aging of skin can be significantly delayed by the daily use of SPF 15 sunscreen.

Cleanse your skin thoroughly every day, using either a cream, or warm water and mild facial wash. Pat your face dry and avoid pulling the fine skin around your eyes.
During your morning routine, massage your face and neck with your fingertips to stimulate circulation and boost overall skin tone.
Avoid touching your face too much during the day as this can spread bacteria from your hands. Squeezing blemishes can cause scarring.

For healthy hair
Use a shampoo that is the right type for your hair and wash with warm water followed by a cool rinse. Massage your scalp gently.
Use a good moisturising conditioner every time you shampoo. Leave the conditioner on for the correct length of time and rinse thoroughly using cool water.
Excessive heat and blow-drying can damage your hair. Hold the dryer at least eight inches from your hair and keep it moving.
Even when trying to grow hair, the ends should be trimmed at least every eight weeks. Splits can travel up the hair shaft if neglected and they can only be repaired by cutting.
Brush your hair regularly. Brushing will stimulate circulation in your scalp and distributes your hair's natural oils to create shine. Use a brush with natural bristles and rounded ends or a wide tooth comb.
Hair is nourished through the bloodstream so why not ask your partner to gently massage your scalp. This will promote circulation and reduce tension.

For healthy nails
Nails are similar to hair in composition and rely on nutrients from the blood stream for their growth and health. Thus a wholesome, balanced diet is vital for healthy nails.
Have a regular manicure to keep your nails and cuticles looking neat. This will give you more of an incentive for keeping them that way.
Frequent wetting and drying of hands can leave nails brittle. Use rubber gloves every time you carry out tasks such as washing dishes.
Never cut your cuticles or use any instrument underneath.
Manicurists recommend filing nails in one direction only. Keep the emery board at a 45 degree angle under the edge of your nail to prevent the tip from splitting.
Hands and nails are often dry. Keep a rich cream with sunscreen in your bag or desk drawer and apply during the day. Once a week, apply a deep moisturising mask and leave on for 15 minutes.

General advice
Regular exercise will stimulate your circulation, which will oxygenate and nourish your skin and scalp.
A wholesome, balanced diet is vital for healthy skin, hair and nails. Try to eat at least five portions of fresh fruit and vegetables every day.
Take time to relax and get plenty of sleep, especially during the two weeks before your wedding. This will help your cells regenerate.
Common factors that damage your skin and hair include pollution, central heating, crash dieting, stress and anxiety. So avoid them as much as possible.
If your style of life means that you may not be getting enough vitamins and minerals, take a supplement designed to complement your daily skin and hair care routine.
