Traditional Graces

We often get asked for examples of a traditional grace which may be used before the wedding breakfast. We hope this selection of graces will offer some inspiration.

Father we thank Thee for this food,
for health and strength and all things good.
May others all these blessings share,
and hearts be grateful everywhere.

(Traditional, circa 1800s)

Some hae meat and canna eat,
And some wad eat that want it;
But we hae meat and we can eat,
And sae the Lord be thanit.

(Robert Burns)

Our Father in Heaven,
We give thanks for the pleasure of gathering together for this occasion.
We give thanks for this food prepared by loving hands.
We give thanks for life, the freedom to enjoy it all.
And all other blessings. As we partake of this food,
We pray for health and strength to carry on
and try to live as you would have us.
This we ask in the name of Christ Our Heavenly Father.

(Harry Jewell, mid-1900s)

For what we are about to receive
may the Lord make us truly thankful
for Jesus Christ sake. Amen

We thank you, Lord, for happy hearts,
for rain and sunny weather;
we thank you for the food we eat,
and that we are together. Amen

Thank you God for blue skies over me,
Green grass under me,
Good friends beside me.
Thank you God for good food in front of me
And peace all over the world. Amen

Thank you for the world so sweet,
Thank you for the food we eat,
Thank you for the birds that sing,
Thank you, God, for everything!

(Edith Rutter Leatham)
