Wedding Talk
Frequently Asked Questions

What versions of browser software work with Wedding Talk?
You need to use a web browser that is Java enabled in order to use Wedding Talk. If your browser is not Java enabled (or your browser has this setting switched off) you will not see the chat room but get a message "Because your browser is not Java enabled, you will not be able to join our chat session. Sorry!".

The following Netscape and Microsoft browers are recommended:
Windows 95 (or greater) users: Netscape 2.0 or higher. Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 or higher.
    Win 3.1 users:
Use Netscape 3.01 Beta with Java for Windows 3.1
    MAC users:
You must use MS Internet Explorer 3.01b or Netscape 4.0 (or greater) - Wedding Talk will not work reliably with Netscape 3.0
Using versions 4 and higher of either Netscape or MS Internet Explorer will load the chat program much quicker than the earlier versions.

How do I chat?
When you visit the Wedding Talk chat room page, you will see the chat window (once the chat program has downloaded). Enter your nick name (user name) a password is not required. You are now in the chat room and will be able to see others that are connected to Wedding Talk in the user window on the right. Type any message in the text box at the bottom and hit return and it is seen by all other users by default.
Why does the chat window take so long to load?
The chat program is quite large. Therefore during busy times or if your Internet connection is slow, the chat program may take several minutes to load. However, once loaded, you should not experience any delays in seeing messages posted.
I cannot connect to Wedding Talk. I get some or all of the following message: "Connection Failed. Disconnected: Network connection closed." What is the problem?
These errors are usually due to your Internet connection going down or your inability to access our chat server, which is located in the US. This can be due to a failure with your ISP (Internet Service Provider), your modem or due to some intermediate computer on the path between your computer and our chat server being down. It can also be because you are behind a firewall or using a proxy server (i.e. not directly connected to the Net).

If you suspect the connection problem is due to some other computer on the path from your machine to our chat server in the US being down or slow, you should try to reconnect later when the net is behaving better!

To check to see if you are connected to the Internet via a proxy server with your ISP, check your browser's settings. if you are connected via a proxy server, you do not have a live connection, hence live chat will not work.
When I connect, I get the message "NickServe - This Nickname is owned by someone else" - What's the problem?
Wedding Talk is hosted on a chat server that is shared by other chat rooms running on other web sites. The server will only accept unique names, therefore, your name is already in use on the server (probably in a different chat room). To overcome this, log in again using a different nick name or use a different combination of upper and lower case letters. The style of nick name we suggest you use i.e. your first name followed by the first letter of your surname (e.g. SueM) should ensure a degree of uniqueness.
I am using a MAC and cannot connect to Wedding Talk, why?
There are known problems with Netscape and Internet Explorer's implementation of Java. The chat software that drives Wedding Talk is used by thousands of websites worldwide with many MAC users who do not experience any problems. However for some MAC users, the chat software either does not work at all or works in a limited manner. We recommend the following for MAC users:
    Mac OS8
    MS Internet Explorer 4.0
    JIT compiler option disabled
    Microsoft Java VM
Please note, Netscape 4.0 is also known to work reliably for a large number of MAC users.
I was logged on and the connection to WeddingGuideUK.com dropped. I cannot log back with the same username (nick), why?
If you log back via the same machine (IP address) it detects a more recent login and lets you in. However if you use another IP address (another machine or a dynamic IP address that is assigned to you by your ISP), it will not permit another login if it still has a login under that user name. After a time-out period of 10 minutes the user is automatically logged off and you can then reuse the same user name (nick).
Is there a limit to the number of chat room participants?
A maximum of 25 people can be in the chat room at any one time. Any more than this and the messages would probably scroll up the chat window at a rate that is too fast for them to be read! If the chat room proves very popular we will consider opening up further chat rooms.
I am still having problems using the chat room. What can I do?
