Mauritius

The island of Mauritius is approximately 855 kilometres off the east coast of Madagascar, Africa being the nearest continent with Mombassa some 1800 kilometres away.

With her thickly wooded mountain peaks towering above a stunning coastline Mauritius has an air of sophistication and a unique blend of French, Indian, Chinese and Creole cultures.

Documents and Legal requirements
Residency: For a civil wedding you must be resident in Mauritius for twenty-four hours before the ceremony. During this time you must go to the main Registrar’s Office to sign an affidavit to confirm that you are both free to marry. If you have chosen a religious ceremony you are required to be resident for fifteen days before the ceremony.
Proof of ID: Your original birth certificates and a valid 10-year passport are required.
Divorced: If either of you is divorced you will be required to produce your Decree Absolute. Also if you are getting married within ten months of the divorce pronouncement you will need your local doctor’s certificate of non-pregnancy.
Widowed: If you are widowed your deceased spouse’s death certificate and your previous marriage certificate must be produced.
Age restrictions: If either of you is under 18 years old, evidence of parental consent in the form of an Affidavit, stamped by a Notary must be produced.
Name change: If you have legally changed your name by Deed Poll you will need to provide legal proof stamped and signed by a solicitor. This also applies if a married woman has reverted back to her maiden name.
Religious weddings: In addition to the above documents you will be required to produce your christening certificates, a certificate of ‘Good Morality’ from your respective parish priest, specifying that you are both free to marry and not divorced.

Ceremonies
You can choose where your ceremony takes place from a number of beautiful settings, from under a palm tree in the garden of your hotel, or perhaps on a jetty in the sea or even on a boat and of course in one of Mauritius’ lovely churches.

Important considerations
If you are having a civil ceremony you must send photocopies of your documents to The Registry, Civil Status Division (address below) and you must take the originals with you for submission on your wedding day. If you have chosen to have a religious wedding your original documents will be required 6 weeks before and 8 weeks if you are of different religions, as the case must go to your local Bishop.
