British Virgin Islands

More than forty islands, rocks and cays make up the British Virgin Islands, the most well known being, Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke. Lying nearly 100 kilometres (sixty miles) east of Puerto Rico and directly northeast of St. John, the islands are home for just twelve thousand people.

Deserted beaches and spectacular scenery are the hallmark of these islands. Deep waters and sheltered bays offer some of the best sailing in the world. The British Virgin Islands are a paradise for those seeking to escape. The hotels tend to offer most activities as there is little to do except swim, sunbathe and relax. A holiday off the beaten track in the British Virgin Islands means leaving the crowds behind, and discovering one of the most romantic spots on the world!

Your licence will take three days to process and once granted is valid for three months from the date it is signed. At the Attorney General’s Office you will be required to:
- Purchase a $110 (US currency) postage stamp for a Special Licence, if you have been resident in the BVI for 1 day or $50 postage stamp if you have been resident for fifteen days or more.

You must have two witnesses to witness and sign your application form for the licence. These witnesses need not be the same two witnesses who are present at your marriage ceremony. You may request BV Islanders to be your witnesses at the Attorney General’s Office and at your wedding ceremony.
Having applied for your licence you should then go to the Registrar’s Office to schedule an appointment for the date and time you want to be married. If you have telephoned your appointment before you travelled you will need make a confirmation.

If you wish to be married at the Registrar’s Office you will be required to pay a fee of $35 or $100 if you wish your wedding ceremony to be performed outside the office. Also, if the Registrar is required to go off the island of Tortola, to one of the adjoining islands, you will be asked to pay the Registrar’s Transportation to that island.
