Weddings Abroad - Europe

Italy

Italy is joined to southern Europe in the north by the Alps and to the northeast, near Austria, the spectacular craggy Alpine massif called the dolomites rises up, while near its border with Switzerland is the glacier carved Lake Country, all of which give Italy a rugged natural beauty. In contrast, adjoining the Ligurian Sea, near the French border is the Italian Rivieria, with its famed beaches and beauty spots making Italy a major resort destination. With its imposing history and beautiful cities Italy is the epitome of romance and you can choose to marry anywhere from the beautiful lakes to Shakespeare’s historic Verona.

Proof of ID: Your full birth certificates and 10-year passports will be required for proof of identity.
Proof of status: A Certificate of No Impediment must be obtained from your local Register Office.

below this age you must obtain parental consent in the form of a sworn affidavit.

Ceremonies
The Italian Embassy in London recommend that you arrange your wedding through one of their wedding specialist agencies (see Further Information) and are rather vague on information on how to deal with the procedures yourself, but it can be done if your have the patience and determination.
Civil ceremonies
Civil weddings in Italy can only be performed in a Register Office, and most town halls are located in historical buildings and offer a lovely setting for a wedding. Depending on the Municipality the marriage is taking place in, you are required to sign a Declaration of Intent to Marry two to five days prior to your wedding. The ceremony lasts about thirty minutes and is conducted in Italian. An interpreter will be needed throughout the ceremony and the Declaration of Intent to Marry. Contact the Italian Embassy for details of Register Offices where you can book your ceremony and arrange for an interpreter.
Religious ceremonies
A Roman Catholic ceremony can be performed in most cities and it will be automatically registered with the Italian Authorities, therefore a civil wedding is not required. In some areas mixed religion background marriages can be performed as long a Dispensation is obtained from your local Parish Priest. Ceremonies for other religions can also be organised, but the religious ceremonies of other denominations are not recognised by the Italian Authorities. In which case for the marriage to be valid a civil ceremony is required prior to the religious ceremony. This can take place either in Italy or at home before you travel.

Obtaining your marriage licence

A Certificate of No Impediment must be obtained from your local Register Office and sent, along with photocopies of the first five pages of your passports and your original birth certificates, to the British Consulate in the Italian city where you wish to marry. You will then be issued with a Nulla Osta, which you take to the Register Office on your arrival. Allow at least three months for the paperwork to be completed, as Italian bureaucracy is notoriously slow and complicated.
